Only Selfish families sleep train

Updated: Jun 20, 2024

This is the biggest sleep myth I have heard!

I understand that many parents are concerned about sleep training and have their reservations when it comes to this topic. While some may view sleep training sceptically, labelling it as something "only selfish families" do, it's crucial to consider the broader picture. I value everyone's opinion and appreciate that sleep training may not be suitable for every family. However, for those of you with concerns, let's take a moment to review the evidence supporting sleep training. Research shows that sleep training can be beneficial for both infants and parents, leading to improved sleep quality, reduced stress, and overall well-being. I encourage an open discussion where we can explore this evidence together and address any specific worries you might have.
Study 1

This study showed that behavioural sleep interventions such as sleep training are effective in improving infant sleep and reducing parental stress. It reported no adverse effects on childs' mental health or attachment, up to 12 months later.

Study 2

This study is a comprehensive review concluding that various sleep training methods are both effective and safe when implemented correctly. 94% of participants reported that behavioural interventions were efficacious

Study 3

This study states that using an effective technique with sleep training can treat or reduce post natal depression, anxiety and stress in mothers. A sample of 80 women were assessed. The proportion of mothers reported to have any degree of depression decreased by 85% from 26/80 (32.5%) to 4/80 (5%).

So, rest assured that sleep training, when done with care and the right approach, can be beneficial for your entire family.
