The Dreaded 2-Year Sleep Regression

The 2-year sleep regression can be a challenging and exhausting phase for both parents and toddlers. Just when you thought your little one’s sleep routine was well-established, suddenly, sleep becomes a struggle again. Understanding what’s happening and how to manage it can make a significant difference in getting through this challenging period.

The 2-year sleep regression refers to a temporary disruption in a toddler’s sleep patterns that typically occurs around their second birthday. This can manifest as increased night wakings, difficulty falling asleep, early morning awakenings, and resistance to naps. Believe me when I say, I know first-hand how difficult this regression can be but it does get better!!!

Why Does It Happen?

Several factors contribute to the 2-year sleep regression:

1.     Developmental Milestones: At this age, toddlers are rapidly developing new skills, such as language, motor abilities, and social awareness. This cognitive and physical growth can make it harder for them to settle down and stay asleep.
2.     Increased Independence: Two-year-olds are starting to assert their independence, which can lead to resistance at bedtime as they test boundaries and seek to make their own choices.
3.     Separation Anxiety: Around this age, toddlers can experience a resurgence of separation anxiety, making them more aware of and distressed by their caregivers' absence at night.
4.     Transitions: This period often includes significant changes such as moving from a crib to a toddler bed, potty training, or starting preschool, all of which can disrupt sleep routines.
Strategies to Manage the 2-Year Sleep Regression
1.     Maintain a Consistent Routine: Consistency is key. Keeping a regular bedtime and naptime routine helps regulate your toddler’s internal clock and provides a sense of security.
2.     Create a Calming Environment: Ensure the sleep environment is conducive to rest. A dark, quiet, and cool room with minimal distractions can help your child settle down.

3.     Offer Reassurance: Provide extra comfort and reassurance during this time. Spend a little more time on bedtime routines like reading stories, singing lullabies, or cuddling.
4.    Set Clear Boundaries: While offering comfort, it’s also important to set and maintain clear boundaries around sleep. Gently but firmly encourage your child to stay in bed and use calming techniques to help them resettle if they wake up.

5. Don’t drop the nap prematurely: A common feature of the 2-year sleep regression is the so-called “nap strike.” Many toddlers begin resisting their daytime naps, leading parents to wonder if they are ready to drop the nap altogether. However, it’s essential to continue offering a nap daily. Two-year-olds still need 1-2 hours of daytime sleep to support their growth and overall well-being. With persistence and patience, most toddlers will resume napping once this phase passes.

6.  Encourage Daytime Activity: Engage your child in plenty of physical activity and stimulating play during the day to help them burn off energy and be more ready for sleep at night.
7. Separation anxiety: This can be managed with gently whilst meeting your toddler’s needs, without needing to stay with your toddler all night. Techniques such as "pop outs," giving love hearts, providing comfort objects, and reading books that address separation anxiety can all be effective. 8. Be Patient: Remember, this phase is temporary. With consistency and understanding, your toddler’s sleep patterns will eventually improve.
